Ok everyone,

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on my blog and I apologize for that.
But, at least 60 new people have subscribed and I’m hoping that the ones with squirrelly names and addresses are not gonna cause me any problems later.

Now, Since my last blog I’ve been out on some more tour dates with Bootsy Collins and have visited a place that I might like to move to.
Denver, Colorado is that place and I have friends in the music biz and friends that are not.
The fact is that I really like it there and it feels right.
And that is that!

Later this year I hope to have more exiting news.
I’m working on a project that with change many things and I’m very excited to get it off the ground.

Please continue to read my blogs and I hope to meet those of you who I don’t know in the near future.
Please feel free to “kindly” comment

Cheers, Erik

Holiday Season 2013/2014 & Touring…. PART 1

Hello all,

So, Christmas was GREAT and the fact that I was with family and that my girlfriend was here just made it all worth it. Thank you GOD for blessing me.

After Christmas I had to fly to Omaha and then on to Denver with Bootsy Collins. The Omaha gig was pretty cool. They’ll never get Funked like that again! Warren Buffett’s Daughter Alice was there to get her Funk on too. After the gig, one of the guys from the opening group drove 4 of us to Denver in his SUV. You know I’m tallright?? Haha. YeahI was happy for a much needed stretch of the legs after more than 8hrs in the back seat.

The drive to Denver was quite picturesque at one point as we neared the mountains, HUGE flocks of geese just painted the early morning sky. Didn’t get any pictures of that, but I did get a decent shot of the beautiful sky and clouds.

The Bootsy Collins Tour was going to Denver for The String Cheese Incident New Year’s Eve 20th Anniversary Celebration. String Cheese had Bootsy Collins on the 28th and then The Flaming Lips on the 29th. Maaaan. We Funked Denver all up that night!!!

I was also really happy to do that show because I got to see some friends that I hadn’t seen for years. These crazy folks I know from many places: Pittsburgh, James Brown Band, Augusta, Florida & Denver. I can’t wait to see them all again! Thanks for the Guinness guys!!!!

OkWhat’s next? Right! New Year’s Eve.

I had no idea what my girlfriend and I were going to do for NYE, so I put out a Facebook post asking who in the area had anything going on and my friend Todd who was first a sound engineer for James Brown and then became the Production/Road/Fixer/Tour Manager for JB and the band. Todd’s 80’s band “The Leg Warmers” was giving a NYE show in the area and so we went. Hanging out with Todd, Gavin (also did sound for JB) and the rest of the guys was a great way to start 2014. We reminisced about JB and after JB when Todd worked for Joss Stone. Great times and Great stories! Todd was gracious enough to get us VIP seating for NYE. We were too happy.

We look forward to hanging out with these guys again soon!

NOW… comes the JAM Cruise. WowWhat a great and tiring time we had. This was JAM Cruise 12 and people who had been on every cruise said that Bootsy’s show was the best they’d ever seen! I was blown away! The complements never stopped. We went from watching This group to That group and eating and drinking and performing and the entire cycle again. What a fantastic time that was.

Please stay tuned for Part 2 with more on the JAM Cruise 12 and more pictures.

Yes…. I know!

(“Partial” Satire)

It seems that the article attached to my Blog reflects what many of my musician colleagues, comrades, cohorts and friends have known for thousands of years. Problems arise when “some” revert back to their Palaeolithic selves when engaging with us (Somewhat Higher Beings) and their brains simply close off all reasonable thought.
We are then left with an unfavorable result. Nevertheless, most of us continue to attempt this tedious process daily and as effectively as possible because we know that it’ll get through your thick sculls sooner or later. Thus, such articles need not be written about the obvious.
HA!

‘Drummers are natural intellectuals’

By Gary Cleland

12:01AM BST 17 Apr 2008

Drummers are better known for their beats than their brain power, but research has suggested that they might actually be natural intellectuals.

Scientists who asked volunteers to keep time with a drumstick before taking intelligence tests discovered that those with the best sense of rhythm also scored highest in the mental assessments.

Born smart?        Keith Moon

The late Keith Moon, drummer with The Who, could have had natural intellect.

Prof Frederic Ullen, from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, concluded that there was a link between intelligence, good timing and the part of the brain used for problem-solving.

He said: “The rhythmic accuracy in brain activity that is observed when a person maintains a steady beat is also important to the problem-solving capacities measured with the intelligence tests.”

For the study, Prof Ullen and Guy Madison, from Sweden’s Umea University, asked 34 right-handed men aged between 19 and 49 to tap a drumstick at a variety of different intervals.

They were then given a psychometric test of 60 questions and problems.

Prof Ullen said: “We found that people with high general intelligence were also more stable on a very simple timing task.

“We also found that these participants had larger volumes of the white matter in the brain, which contains connections between brain regions.”

Scans of the brain have shown that it uses a wide distribution of areas to listen to music.

The left side tends to process rhythm and pitch and the right looks after timbre and melody.

The coming end to 2013

Blogger Grove

How was 2013 for you? Smooth, Rough, Fun, Terrible, challenging? All of the above?

Hahaha….For me it was “All of the above”.

Pretty much every year is the same depending how you look at it. I spent a year in Bangkok and had a pretty good time…performing that is. I met and performed with some amazing musicians in Thailand, both Thai and Non-Thai. I was very happy and blessed to have had the Erik Hargrove & Friends show at The EH and Friends SaxPub 2013Saxophone Pub in Bangkok thanks to Neung Jakkawal.

Neung is one of the most sought after pianist/bandleaders in Thailand. The musicians in his band are all top notch performers.

Another reason why the Erik Hargrove & Friends was special was because my wonderful girlfriend Lily Anna was a special guest singer on the show and she Killed It!!! There were many such guests that showed up and sat-in on the show. (hence the “….& Friends” part). Koh Mr. Saxman and many others were setting the place on fire.

Anyway, there were MANY memorable musical times in Thailand and around Asia, but that all has come to a close since I’m not back in the U.S. with Bootsy Collins and we have 2 more shows to close out the year and I’m very much looking forward to them. We’ll be kicking off 2014 with The Jam Cruise Jan 4-9.

Do continue to check my calendar on http://www.erikhargrove.com/blog for more updates. Also, please subscribe to my blog. Just so I know that I’m not just writing to myself.  Ha!

Friday The 13th Strikes & WordPress and Facebook Integration

Blogger Grove

Blogger Grove

Well, it seems that while being on tour, things can and will go wrong….just like in normal life right?

Friday The 13th struck the Bootsy Collins Band coming out of Cincinnati, Ohio last night with a busted trailer AND bus. The band and crew tried, without success, to make it in two vans to Terminal 5 in New York before our scheduled performance. Disappointing to everyone involved, but there it is. What can ya do?

On a different matter… I’m trying to sync my WordPress Blog with both Facebook accounts in order to streamline it all. There are LOTS of finagling to be done. Maybe one of you brains out there will help me along. Hahaha

Also, PLEASE subscribe to my blog. You can do this by adding a comment at the end of the blog and it will take you to the appropriate screen to sign up.

Stay tuned for lots more as I get used to this Blogging thang.

Traveling to New York

Ok… So, I’m driving to the Metro to get to Reagan National Airport and I get a call that the bus and trailer that has the other members of the band AND our equipment has broke down.

Apparently, the bus is ok, but the trailer is not.

I was asked what equipment that I needed for the show because they were going to put stuff in the bus. I had to do a bit of quick thinking as I knew the guys were outside and freezing up in Ohio.

Cymbals, Snares, Electronics aaaand…. Oh Yeah… Sticks!!!

I REALLY hope and pray that everyone makes it on time safe and sound.

New York 13 Dec 2013

Hello everyone,

This is really just a test to see how this all works out.
I’ve never done a Blog before, but I think that I should keep and nice journal of the great things that are happening in my professional life.

Let me tell you about what’s happening tomorrow. I’ll get on a plane at 6:30Am and get to JFK around 7:45am. I’ll take the train into Manhattan and then check-in to my hotel. Later that afternoon I’ll head on over to the venue and checkout my drums and do some fine tuning. Sound Check will be soon after.

Terminal 5 is the venue. Hope to see some familiar faces.

Cheers, Erik
